About the "Old Bucktails"

Listed herein are books and articles that include information about the Bucktails.  It is our hope that, ultimately, we will include every article written about the regiment, every letter written by a Bucktail that is still in existence, every book written on the 1st Pennsylvania Rifles , and every reference to the "Tails" in the Official Records, in any other publication, record, report, newspaper or manuscript.

To thoroughly research a Civil War regiment, it is essential to include material that does not necessarily include a direct reference to the regiment.   Often much is learned from collateral sources such as histories of other regiments that fought next to or near the Bucktails.  We can learn much about the regiment by studying the movements of the various brigades, divisions, and Corps' that the Bucktails were attached to.  In an effort to distinguish between the various sources, I will try to break down the information into various categories, as follows: Individual soldier accounts (letters, diaries, etc); Information at the regimental level (Bucktails specifically mentioned); Information at the Brigade, Division, and Corps level;  For example if the source is written about McCall's division and the Bucktail's were part of McCall's division at the time of the account, this information will be listed under the Brigade,Division, Corps level.  Some sources may fall into more than category....in which case, the source will be listed under each category.

There are many links to the Making of America web site, since they already have many of the cited sources scanned and residing on their web site.  All links to the MOA are included here with their full agreement and permission.

If you have information on the "Old Bucktails"  that may not be included herein, we would be eternally indebted to you if you would provide us with that information.   Thank you!
