Affidavit of Thomas B. Lewis
(Supporting the argument that Jacob McCloud was entitled to a pension)
State of Pennsylvania, County of Perry, Personally came before me a Notary Public in and for the County of Perry --Captain T.B. Lewis late a capt. in Co B, 1st Penna Rifles and on his solemn affirmation doth say that.
Jacob McCloud was a private in my company, and in 1864, about February, he reported to me to be sent back to the Co, but he was crippled up so much with Rheumatism that I refused to do so. I advised him to go home and remain there until he was better and then report to Harrisburg.
I also seen him at Libby Prison in Richmond, he was being taken out to be sent to Belle Isle. he was then suffering so much with Rheumatism that he could scarcely stand up. I seen him in 1877 some time and he was then unable to do any-thing on account of Rheumatism. I know that said Jacob McCloud was strong and well when he enlisted, and he always done his duty as a soldier. I believe this Rheumatism was contracted in the army from exposure. I also affirm that I have no interest in this case, either directly or indirectly.
Affirmed and subscribed to before me this 16th day of December 1887
John A. Shearer
