Affidavit of Robert B. Valentine
(Supporting the argument that Jacob McCloud was entitled to a pension)
State of Pennsylvania, County of Perry, on this 21st day of January A.D. 1890; personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace in and for the aforsesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths, Robert B. Valentine aged 49 years, a resident of Wheatfield Township in the County of Perry and State of Penna. whose Post Office address is Duncannon Perry County Penna.
I was a member of Co. B First regt Rifles Penna Reserves and claimant Jacob McCloud was a member of same company and regiment. On the 30th day of June 1862, while in the battle of Charles City Crossroads, in the State of Virginia, we were both taken prisoner and taken to Belle Isle.in Va. and kept there during the month of July 1862 and that we were compelled to lay on the ground without any covering to protect us from the wether and that Jacob McCloud was very sick-and when taken away--a short time before I was parolled--I never expected to see him alive. I do not know what his disease was, but thought at that time, that it was rheumatism, from the effects of exposure, as many of the boys were afflicted with that disease.
I further declare that I have no interest in said case and am not concerned in its prosecution.
